One Poem
by Adam Gianforcaro
Last Song
Queer kids to the front / on the stage / want them dancing / stomping / to step off and place their dirty shoe soles / on the heads of their oppressors / and walk / walk / foot to skull / for as long as they can balance / but balance is a tricky thing / like loving oneself / loving each other / I said all queer kids on stage / now / queer kids / headwalking their way to heaven / no / that sounds too much like dying / forget heaven / fall / fall and blame gravity / but it’s more / than gravity pulling things down / think back / remember / remember how to greet the floor / these kids / if they’re lucky / they’ll have someone / to catch them / someone who means well / won’t put their hands where they don’t / belong / I want falling to feel like freedom / and freedom wants / for these kids to rest a while / they need to rest / need a place that feels safe / is safe / somewhere warm / comfortable / for them to take their time / regroup / then back on their feet / just like that / perfect / I want a riot now / riot and rage and vengeance / anger channeled like a television / hey / if energy can neither be created / nor destroyed / how can one know such levels of destruction / reality means / to lose the will to carry on / and yet they will carry on / carry each other / they will be thankful / and thank their bodies / and other bodies / for lifting them up / for steering them again toward the stage / a runway from which to walk / to fly / and remember always how it feels / to be in community with weightlessness
