One Poem
by Elizabeth Anne Schwartz

Covenant

I love her like
David loved Jonathan—
with the depth of
their promise.
I would give her
the shirt off my back,
I would weave our souls together,
kiss her fiercely
and weep at our parting.

The scriptures don’t speak
of these men alone together
in ancient halls.
They don’t describe David,
reclined, running his fingers
through Jonathan’s hair,
the way Jonathan’s eyes
must have gleamed
as David slept.

So little is written of their love.
But as I watch her dream,
it isn’t hard
to read between the lines.
